Influence of Nonseasonal River Discharge on Sea Surface Salinity and Height

چکیده

River discharge influences ocean dynamics and biogeochemistry. Due to the lack of a systematic, up-to-date global measurement network for river discharge, models typically use seasonal climatology as forcing. This compromises simulated nonseasonal variation (the deviation from climatology) near plumes undermines their usefulness interdisciplinary research. Recently, reanalysis-based daily varying data set was developed, providing first opportunity quantify effects on models. Here we this force model 1992–2017 period. We contrast experiment with another (with identical atmospheric forcings) forced by same isolate effects, focusing sea surface salinity (SSS) height (SSH). Near major mouths, causes standard deviations in SSS (SSH) 1.3–3 practical unit (1–2.7 cm). The inclusion results notable improvement against satellite most tropical-to-midlatitude mouths minor SSH or in-situ some mouths. changes associated can be explained halosteric estimated accurately through changes. A recent theory predicting impact is found perform reasonably well overall but underestimates around has limited skill when applied rivers equator Arctic Ocean.

Mississippi River and Sea Surface Height Effects on Oil Slick Migration

Millions of barrels of oil escaped into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) after the 20 April, 2010 explosion of Deepwater Horizon (DH). Ocean circulation models were used to forecast oil slick migration in the GoM, however such models do not explicitly treat the effects of secondary eddy-slopes or Mississippi River (MR) hydrodynamics. Here we report oil front migration that appears to be driven by sea s...

Remote Sensing of Sea Surface Salinity: a Case Study in the Burdekin River, North-eastern Australia

The principles of remotely sensing sea surface salinity are brietly reviewed, The airborne instrument used for this study is a Scanning Low Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SLFMR). It has spatial resolution of typically 500m (depending on the altitude of the aircraft) and a salinity resolution of about I psu, This configuration is suitable for studying the dynamics of river plumes as they form o...

SMOS: Measuring Sea Surface Salinity from Space

In May 1999, the European Space Agency (ESA) selected SMOS as an Earth Explorer Opportunity mission. One of its goals is the generation of global Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) maps. The sensor embarked is an L-band interferometric radiometer with full-polarimetric capability called MIRAS. The retrieval of SSS from microwave measurements is based on the fact that the brightness temperature (TB) of ...

Stochastic Dynamics of Sea Surface Height Variability

Sea surface height anomalies measured by the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX)/Poseidon satellite altimeter indicate high values of skewness and kurtosis. Except in a few regions, including the Gulf Stream, the Kuroshio Extension, and the Agulhas Retroflection, that display bimodal patterns of sea surface height variability, kurtosis is uniformly greater than 1.5 times the squared skewness mi...
